Amnesty International issued a press release today stating that the local office of the organization will be closed on October 31. The office itself is responsible for human rights education; the regional office responsible for research and advocacy in Southeast Asia will be closed before the end of this year. And transferred to other offices in the Asia Pacific region.

Amnesty International Chairman Anjhula Mya Singh Bais explained that the decision is related to the Hong Kong National Security Law. After the Hong Kong National Security Law is implemented, human rights organizations cannot operate freely in Hong Kong, nor can it continue to work without fear of government retaliation.

She said that Hong Kong has long been an ideal base for international citizen groups, but the recent actions against local human rights organizations and trade unions reflect the regime's desire to remove dissent from Hong Kong. In such an unstable environment, it is difficult for Amnesty International to operate.

On June 19, 2020, the Hong Kong branch of Amnesty International and other groups protested at the Liaison Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, demanding the suspension of the Hong Kong National Security Law legislation.
