Nuclear: why France cannot repeat the industrial feat of the 1970s

2021-10-25T19:25:44.484Z

DECRYPTION - In 30 years, France has been able to build a nuclear fleet at a speed unmatched in the world with nearly 60 nuclear reactors put into service.

Between 1977 and 2002, France was able to build a nuclear fleet at a speed unmatched in the world.

In 30 years, 58 nuclear reactors have been put into service.

Repeating such an industrial feat seems out of reach, while the question of renewing EDF's fleet arises.

"The highest industrial proposal in the sector consists, to date, of achieving a nuclear fleet with a full capacity of 50 gigawatts in a scenario of a proactive nuclear revival"

, writes RTE in its report on "Energy Futures 2050" from France.

Compare to today's 63 gigawatts, including the Flamanville EPR.
