State minister or local chief: This is the choice made by the CDU members in the Bergisches Land.

It is about a direct candidacy that will probably also lead to the state parliament.

Interior Minister Herbert Reul takes up the position - but the local district chief of all people opposes him.

Burscheid - North Rhine-Westphalia's Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) is running today to be a direct candidate for the CDU in his home constituency in the 2022 state elections.

The outcome is completely open, because the 69-year-old competes against the CDU district association chairman Uwe Pakendorf.

"It will be a close race," party circles say.

The 43-year-old Pakendorf sees his candidacy in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis as a step towards rejuvenation and renewal of the CDU.

Reul, on the other hand, emphasizes that the CDU should also rely on the tried and tested after the defeat in the federal election.

While the Frauen Union has spoken out in favor of Reul in advance, the Junge Union is in favor of Pakendorf.

The CDU city associations in the constituency have made different recommendations.

Until 2004, Reul had already sat in the state parliament for almost two decades and was in the meantime CDU General Secretary in North Rhine-Westphalia, then he moved to the EU Parliament.

In 2017 he was appointed Minister of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia.

He wants to continue in this office after the state elections.

In addition to this, however, he wants to have a mandate in the state parliament, also in order to have influence in the CDU parliamentary group.

About 1000 people are entitled to vote in the election on Monday evening, namely the party members from Burscheid, Kürten, Leichlingen, Odenthal, Overath and Wermelskirchen.

200 to 300 Christian Democrats are expected.

It was not until Saturday that Reul was elected vice-chairman of the NRW CDU with a clear majority at a state party conference.

Now he is threatened with a setback on a smaller stage.
