Oberallgäu - The German Alpine Association criticizes new buildings in the landscape protection area, an inadequate mobility concept and the planned snowmaking system.

The DAV does not fundamentally reject the project on the Grünten, but believes that some adjustments are urgently required.

From 2017 to 2019, the ski lifts on the Grünten were shut down, and operation in the low-lying ski area was no longer worthwhile.

After the takeover by BergWelt GmbH & Co. KG, lift operations on the partly outdated systems were resumed in 2019.

However, due to a dispute with a landowner, the 2021/22 ski season is canceled.

Now the ski area is to be comprehensively modernized and also expanded for summer tourism.

Ecologically unacceptable

"In principle, there is nothing wrong with promoting tourism," emphasizes Steffen Reich, head of the nature conservation and cartography department at the DAV, "but the existing expansion plans are still interfering with nature and the landscape too much."

The plans envisage a 10-seater gondola in year-round operation, including a new valley station and multi-storey car park, plus restaurants at two locations in the area of the mountain station and a newly built path with snow-making equipment that will be used as a toboggan run in winter.

At the altitude of the Grünten, artificial snow is neither ecologically nor economically justifiable, concludes Steffen Reich.

No concept for visitor management?

One of the main points of criticism of the DAV is the sealing of new areas in the landscape protection area.

“It is difficult for us to understand why the planning does not use the already built-up areas.

That means unnecessary clearing and surface sealing - and that in a landscape conservation area, ”explains Steffen Reich.

The expansion plans on the Grünten in the present form focused on skiing and tobogganing and, in the summer months, on guests who use the new gondola for a mountain excursion.

From the point of view of the DAV, there is currently no comprehensive concept for visitor management, especially since even more people will be out and about in the summit region of the Grünten with a summer cable car.

More parking spaces are not the solution

In addition, the concept should aim at a possible conflict-free coexistence of different recreational uses such as mountain biking, hiking, climbing, ski touring and snowshoeing, etc.

“We are also convinced that more and more parking spaces are not the solution.

In times of climate change, we need options for a climate-friendly journey! ”Emphasizes Steffen Reich.

From the point of view of the German Alpine Club, a better connection to local public transport would be a desirable mobility plan.

In this way, the expected traffic load in the surrounding towns could also be reduced.
