There is no doubt that the Corona plague has accelerated the changes in our cinematic content consumption habits.
The cinemas were closed for many months;
Quite a few box office hits such as "The Black Widow" and recently even "Dune" were launched simultaneously on the big screen and on streaming services (in countries where they are available, of course, Israel is not one of them);
And in general - despite a certain return to routine, it's pretty clear that our future will look different, at least when it comes to our outings to the movies.
First of all, although in 2022 we will see far fewer box office hits coming to streaming at the same time as their cinema launch, Hollywood studios have reached an agreement that from now on most films will go online about 45 days after their release, compared to two or three months before the plague.
This is an interesting move, as it will be intriguing to see if viewers prefer to watch the new Marvel movie, for example, as soon as possible on the big screen and close to its launch date, or compromise and wait a month and a half for the movie to hit home.
New research is trying to put these questions in order.
The Civicscience website conducted a survey among 60,000 Americans and found that although about half (54%) of respondents feel safe going to the movies, about 71% of adult respondents prefer to watch a movie at home.
This is not surprising, but as the age of the respondents increases, a larger proportion responded that he would be happy to consume his content from the living room.
In fact, no less than 82% of people aged 55+ would prefer to leave their car in the parking lot and stay in training.
Is cinema becoming an entertainment for young people only?
This is probably the direction.
And what about new movies being launched in cinema and streaming together?
56% of study participants would prefer to watch them at home, even if it means compromising on screen size and sound quality.
Beyond that, 66% of respondents said they were willing to open their wallets and pay up to $ 10 in addition to their monthly subscription to the streaming service, to watch a new movie at home in the first few days of its launch.
Offsets with the price of popcorn, when you think about it.
