The United States said tonight (Monday) that it would be necessary to re-evaluate the normalization between Sudan and Israel following the military coup in the country.

Washington has announced a $ 700 million freeze on the bow following the overthrow of the civilian government by the military faction in the transitional government that emerged after the 2019 revolution.

The arrests of Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdukh and other senior officials led to demonstrations against the army in Khartoum and other cities in the country.

According to the opposition, at least three people were killed in clashes with security forces and another 80 were injured.

The United States Embassy in Khartoum has called on U.S. citizens in the country to stay in their homes.

Ayman Ahmed, a 21-year-old protester from Umm Dorman near Khartoum, told Reuters: "We will defend democracy to the end."

Another demonstrator, who identified himself as Salah, attacked army leader 'Abd al-Fatah al-Burhan: "Burhan cannot deceive us. This is a military coup."

At noon, hours after the coup began, al-Burhan announced the dissolution of the Sovereignty Council and a new interim government, pending new elections in July 2023. He added that Sudan is committed to all the international agreements it has signed.

"We guarantee the commitment of the armed forces to complete the transfer of democratic power to an elected civilian government," al-Burhan said in official television broadcasts.

"The country is now experiencing a real threat and danger to the dreams of the young and to the hope of the nation."

The general announced the ouster of the governors of the states and the freezing of the work of the unit to fight corruption and the committee that investigated massacres of protesters after the 2019 revolution.

According to him, the army was obliged to act due to internal conflicts between some of the political forces, the "hunger for power" and the "incitement to chaos and violence".

The Ministry of Communications, one of the only government bodies still functioning outside the military, has accused Burhan of a "military coup". Muhammad Hassan a-Taishi, a member of the sovereign council disbanded by the army, said the coup was "political stupidity" and promised to oppose it "until the last drop of blood".

The trade union in Sudan, which led the protest against al-Bashir's previous regime, is calling for a general strike and a civilian coup following the coup. "We call on the masses to take to the streets and man them, close all roads with barricades, launch a general strike and not cooperate with the conspirators and launch a civil uprising against them," the group said in a statement posted on Facebook.

Tensions in Sudan have been rising recently, since another coup attempt last month ignited a crisis between the military and civilian groups that have divided power since the overthrow of dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2019.

The civilian faction accused the generals of creating a mock crisis designed to justify seizing power by force, and in recent days military supporters, some according to paid reports, have come out to demonstrate in Khartoum calling for a military coup.

However, their number was significantly lower than the tens of thousands of civilian government supporters who demonstrated on Thursday in Khartoum demanding to complete the transition period.

The transitional government in Sudan has taken the country out of the prolonged international isolation in which it has been under Bashir's Islamist regime, and it has even begun to normalize its relations with Israel.
