The US is imposing sanctions on the head of a torture camp in Libya on allegations of human rights violations. Under the de facto direction of the Libyan national Osama Al Kuni Ibrahim, cruel attacks against those seeking protection were carried out in the camp in Zaviya - including killings, sexual violence and beatings, the US State Department announced on Tuesday. People who traveled through Libya in search of a better life were abused and exploited.
"We will continue to work with the international community and use all means at our disposal to support the victims and to identify those involved in human rights violations," said the State Department.
According to the US Treasury Department, the sanctions include freezing all accounts of Osama Al Kuni Ibrahim.
Human rights organizations regularly complain about the dire conditions in the camps in Libya.
The country is one of the most important transit countries for refugees on their way to Europe.
