The state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has elected the SPD politician Birgit Hesse as president at the start of the eighth electoral period.
The lawyer and former state minister received 59 out of 79 votes in the constituent session of parliament in Schwerin Castle on Tuesday.
The 46-year-old first took over the office in May 2019 after long-time parliamentary speaker Sylvia Bretschneider succumbed to cancer.
Schwerin - Birgit Hesse has been a member of the state parliament since 2016.
Before moving to state politics, she worked as a senior police officer and later as a district administrator in Northwest Mecklenburg.
She lives in the village of Mecklenburg near Wismar, is married and has a daughter.
