Update from October 26, 12.20 p.m.:

Now the election for President of the Bundestag is running. At least 369 votes are necessary, according to Wolfgang Schäuble. The SPD proposes Bärbel Bas. The procedure will take some time, and each member will be called up and voted individually.

Update from October 26, 12:08 p.m.:

In the first session of the Bundestag after the federal election, the AfD tried to prevent Wolfang Schäuble as the new age president. Bernd Baumann, the first parliamentary managing director of the AfD, demanded that Alexander Gauland, as the oldest member of the Bundestag, be granted this position. Shortly afterwards, the plenary voted and the AfD application was clearly rejected. As expected, Wolfgang Schäuble is the age president of the German Bundestag. "I am delighted to take over the chairmanship," said Schäuble afterwards.

First report from October 26th:

Berlin - One month after the Bundestag election *, the new Bundestag will meet for the first time on Tuesday (October 26th) at 11 a.m. The Bundestag Presidium will be re-elected at the constituent meeting - the SPD * MP Bärbel Bas is to succeed the previous President of Parliament Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU *). Schäuble opened the meeting in his capacity as senior president.

The 79-year-old has been a member of the Bundestag since 1972, making it its age president.

Schäuble would have liked to remain President of the Bundestag - but this office traditionally goes to the strongest parliamentary group and thus to the SPD.

The CDU politician has to be content with chairing the meeting until the election of the new Bundestag President - and then making room for his successor.

Before the first session of the Bundestag, an ecumenical service will be celebrated in Berlin's St. Mary's Church (8.30 a.m.).

After election: the new Bundestag is constituted and the government is dismissed

There will also be new faces among the Vice Presidents of the Bundestag. The Union parliamentary group has nominated the CDU politician Yvonne Magwas, the SPD parliamentary group the former integration commissioner of the federal government, Aydan Özoguz. In addition, there will be three well-known vice-presidents: Claudia Roth from the Greens, Petra Pau from the Left and Wolfgang Kubicki from the FDP. They too were re-established by their parliamentary groups and are expected to be elected by a large majority.

According to the Basic Law, the term of office of the previous government ends with the constituent session of the Bundestag.

Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel * (CDU) and her ministers will therefore receive their discharge certificates from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier this Tuesday at 5.30 p.m.

However, you will remain in office until a new government can take over.
