The Chinese authorities imposed on Tuesday October 26 a lockdown in Lanzhou (north-west), which has four million inhabitants, due to a rebound in Covid-19 cases, a hundred days before the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

The country where the coronavirus appeared almost two years ago reported 29 new patients of local origin on Tuesday.

The majority are linked to the movements of a group of contaminated tourists.

While these figures may seem paltry compared to those recorded daily in other parts of the world, they are pushing the authorities to redouble their vigilance as China prepares to host the Winter Olympics from February 4, 2022.

Strict movement control

In Lanzhou, its capital, all residential areas will be subject to "

closed management

" and strict movement control, the municipality announced on Tuesday. Any exit from the home will now only be possible for "

essential

purchases

", an imperative linked to the epidemic, or "

emergency medical treatment

", the authorities said in a statement.

The Chinese capital is also on the teeth with the approach of the Olympics.

In recent days, authorities have asked residents to avoid "

non-essential

"

trips

out of town, as well as large gatherings.

Anyone arriving in Beijing from an area where cases of Covid-19 have been identified must also test negative.

And the Beijing marathon has been postponed indefinitely.

Some 30,000 runners were to take part next Sunday.

Three open investigations

A sign of the seriousness of the situation in the eyes of the authorities, the police in the capital announced on Monday the opening of three investigations for alleged non-compliance with health rules.

Among the suspects: infected people who would have concealed their state of health, confined residents who would have made the wall or pharmacists accused of having given drugs against fever and cough to customers, without reporting it to the authorities.

China has been able to resume almost normal social and economic activity since 2020, thanks in particular to strict monitoring of trips via mobile applications.

Only two deaths have been recorded in more than a year.

The country maintains a health policy that aims for "

zero infection

", with a drastic limitation of entries into its territory, compulsory quarantines, confinements and tests as soon as a few cases appear.
