The Bundestag Presidium will be re-elected at the constituent meeting - the SPD * MP Bärbel Bas is to succeed the previous President of Parliament Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU *).

Schäuble opened the meeting in his capacity as senior president.

Before that, an ecumenical service will be celebrated in Berlin's St. Mary's Church (8.30 a.m.).

After election: the new Bundestag is constituted and the government is dismissed

There will also be new faces among the Vice Presidents of the Bundestag. The Union parliamentary group has nominated the CDU politician Yvonne Magwas, the SPD parliamentary group the former integration commissioner of the federal government, Aydan Özoguz. In addition, there will be three well-known vice-presidents: Claudia Roth from the Greens, Petra Pau from the Left and Wolfgang Kubicki from the FDP. According to the Basic Law, the term of office of the previous government ends with the constituent session of the Bundestag.

Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel * (CDU) and her ministers will therefore receive their discharge certificates from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier this Tuesday at 5.30 p.m.
