The death of a helper five years after the Islamist terrorist attack on the Berlin Christmas market has caused concern among politicians.

The Berlin CDU parliamentary group leader Kai Wegner said on Tuesday that the news of the helper's death was depressing.

The CDU supported the demand to display his name on the steps of the memorial at the Gedächtniskirche.

Berlin - "We expect the Senate to implement this quickly and unbureaucratically."

The Green domestic politician Benedikt Lux announced that almost five years after the attack, a 13th death had been added.

"We will remember him with dignity and continue the fight against terrorism and for more protection of our open society."

According to his husband, the now 49-year-old helper died on October 5th and was buried at his place of residence in Troisdorf near Bonn.

He died of an infectious disease as a result of the long-term illness.

Immediately after the attack on December 19, 2016, the man rushed to the aid of visitors to the Christmas market on Breitscheidplatz.

He was allegedly hit in the head by a beam and seriously injured in the head.

Since then, he has had to be looked after around the clock.

Astrid Passin, who speaks on behalf of many victims and bereaved relatives, demanded in a letter to the Berlin Senate and the MPs that the name of the 49-year-old should also be listed on the steps of the memorial at the Memorial Church in Berlin.

She wanted "unbureaucratic implementation by the 5th anniversary on December 19th".

The Senate has not yet commented on this.
