Member of the DAB Legislative Council, Chen Heng-pin, inspected the site today with the Secretary for Transport and Housing, Chen Fan, and representatives of the Transport Department. He expressed his appreciation for the department’s active efforts in promoting smart car parks to deal with insufficient parking spaces.
Chen Hengpin said that there is a serious shortage of parking spaces in Hong Kong. According to statistics from the Transportation and Housing Bureau, as of December last year, there were about 762,000 licensed vehicles in Hong Kong, an increase of 225,000 vehicles from 2008, an increase of more than 40%, but the increase in parking spaces over the same period Only about 10%.
The ratio of private cars to parking spaces is about 1.1, that is, a private car can be allocated 1.1 parking spaces; and the ratio of trucks to parking spaces is about 0.64, with about three trucks competing for one space.
He pointed out that there are many temporary sites suitable for conversion into parking spaces. He expressed his appreciation for the government's active introduction of smart parking lots to fill the vacancies.
He also pointed out that in addition to Hoi Shing Road in Tsuen Wan, the government plans to start smart car park projects in Pak Shek Kok, San Po Kong, Si Mei Street, Sham Shui Po, Chai Wan and Tseung Kwan O starting next year in order to further solve the problem of Tsuen Kwai. With regard to Tsing’s parking space, he has asked the government to consider adding smart parking spaces in Sham Tseng and Tsing Yi.
