The Ministry of Information, the Directorate of Development Information, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross in Syria, organized a specialized workshop entitled “Media coverage in the face of humanitarian challenges”, with the participation of 22 male and female journalists from various local media outlets.

The two-day workshop at the Sheraton Damascus Hotel reviewed articles from international humanitarian law and international conventions such as Geneva and its protocols, in addition to the cases in which international humanitarian law is applied.

The media side of the workshop also dealt with modern media templates that deal with humanitarian issues, where journalist Ziad Ghosn reviewed examples of them, such as data journalism, modern media and solutions journalism, with practical applications that enrich the participants' skills and enrich their professional experience.

The Director of Developmental Media in the Ministry of Information, Ammar Ghazali, stressed the importance of these workshops in terms of exchanging experiences and the practical training they provide, as they are considered non-traditional workshops because they enrich the skills of the trainees and contribute to their employment in media materials, especially with regard to humanitarian issues and preserving human dignity.

The Deputy Head of the Red Cross Mission in Syria, Rob Dron, indicated that this workshop in Damascus is the third, preceded by two specialized workshops in Homs and Aleppo, considering that these workshops constitute a window for dialogue between the Red Cross Committee and the media and an opportunity to shed light on the humanitarian situation in Syria and see the tasks of the Committee during the Corona pandemic.

Dron stressed that the war during ten years affected every home in Syria and the neighboring peoples and created a humanitarian and economic situation for the Syrians, speaking of the committee's cooperation with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent in the areas of providing emergency responses and interventions in repairing basic infrastructure projects and providing humanitarian support for the most vulnerable cases.

The official spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Syria, Adnan Hizam, indicated that the aim of the workshop is to strengthen the relationship and direct dialogue with the Syrian media and media, reviewing the work of the Committee in Syria and its activities, specifically in terms of humanitarian issues, in addition to providing an overview of the history of the Committee’s founding, its emergence and development over the years.
