The North Rhine-Westphalian SPD leader Thomas Kutschaty has praised the new Bundestag President Bärbel Bas, who comes from Duisburg, as a “real role model”.
Bas is a role model "for everyone who wants to be smart, courageous, without showing off and with diligence, politically involved," said Kutschaty on Tuesday and congratulated her on the election.
With her "collegial, sympathetic and successful style", Bas has helped organize the SPD in North Rhine-Westphalia since 2010 as the state party council chairwoman.
Düsseldorf - "We say" Thank you "and are proud," said Kutschaty.
The health politician and previous deputy group leader Bas received a large majority in the constituent session of parliament.
The 53-year-old replaces the previous President of the Bundestag Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU).
Bas is only the third woman in this office in the history of the Bundestag.
In the federal election, the SPD-Left defended its direct mandate in the Duisburg I constituency.
