A 46-year-old driver rammed his car into a tree in Sievershausen near Hanover and suffered fatal injuries.
The man lost control of his car in a curve on a wet road, the police said on Tuesday.
The car hurled against the tree.
Witnesses alerted the rescue workers, but for the trapped driver, any help came too late.
Sievershausen - Landstrasse 387 had to be closed for several hours for the rescue work.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
The police called on all motorists to be particularly careful in wet and cold weather.
