Landfills of ultimate household waste, which cannot be recycled, naturally release methane.
About 16% of methane emissions in France would come from it.
Most of the time, this strong greenhouse gas is captured to be "flared", that is to say burned, which reduces but does not eliminate the release of CH4 into the air.
A French industrial start-up, Waga Energy, has invented a system to recover, filter and inject this methane into the gas network.
“Around 1,000 terawatt-hours (TWh) of renewable gas are stored each year in waste units without being used
,” emphasizes Mathieu Lefebvre, CEO of the SME.
This corresponds to 20 billion euros of wasted gas. ”
About ten projects
The company has developed a Wagabox.
This container-sized facility captures and processes landfill methane.
The gas which escapes from the waste is indeed impure and contains a lot of air.
The development of this box required ten years of research and development.
