On October 31, the World Climate Conference will convene in Glasgow, Scotland.

More than 100 world leaders will gather after a year in which the world has gone through some particularly severe climate events, while we seem unable to stop global warming and global temperatures continue to rise.

The COP26 conference is expected to last about two weeks and will discuss a number of objectives, including the acceleration of the understandings reached in the Paris Agreement in 2015.

Among the goals: stop using coal, reduce deforestation, accelerate the transition to electric vehicles, encourage investment in renewable energy, protect natural habitats and more.

The big goal, of course, as set out in the Paris Agreements and to which the member states have legally pledged, is to reduce emissions, so as not to reach the critical warming point of more than 1.5 degrees Celsius or the less optimistic target of 2 degrees Celsius.

This is a task that, at the moment, according to all scientists, we are unable to meet.

As of this moment, the commitments of the Paris Agreement, not to mention compliance with them, are not sufficient at all, and according to the calculations as of the current situation, by the end of the century warming of more than 3 degrees is expected

After 25 UN Climate Change Conferences, the 26th Conference is particularly crucial. In recent years, many more natural disasters and unprecedented climatic events, storms, fires, floods - all of these will come to us in greater intensities.

However, there is still hope.

There are many steps that can be taken to stop global warming as much as possible, and perhaps even, if we really make an effort, we will succeed in shattering scientists' gloomy predictions.

Right now the ambition is to reduce emissions by half in the next decade and reach zero carbon emissions by the middle of the century.

During the conference, countries should present their targets by 2030, as well as more future ambitions, alongside the steps they will take to reduce gas emissions.

As stated, the Paris Agreements States have legally committed to reducing emissions and investing resources and funds for the benefit of the cause in order to meet the targets.

But the next decade is especially critical and crucial when it comes to stopping global warming - the prospect of change - is in the next decade, and so the importance of the conference and the steps the queen will decide - but more importantly - the countries' compliance with those decisions.

Israel's low targets

Compared to other Western countries, Israel has set itself rather low emission reduction targets, and certainly not sufficient ones.

Israel's climate plan targets now stand at a 27% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 85% by 2050, while other Western countries' targets have set reduction targets of at least 50% by 2030 and zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Add to this the fact that so far the State of Israel has not met the goals it has set for itself, including sectoral goals such as streamlining electricity consumption, using renewable energy, reducing travel and municipal waste, and more.

Ahead of the conference to be convened earlier this week, environmental activists will hold a "climate march" in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv calling on the Israeli government to declare a climate emergency in Israel.

Climate and politics

The attempt to reach a solution to the climate crisis is, as usual, sheltered in the shadow of international politics and power struggles between the nations of the world.

Along with the presence of rival heads of state like Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi, there is very great tension between major powers like the United States and China and Russia.

The Biden administration presents an ambitious plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than half by 2050, a plan that has been sharply criticized by China, whose heavy industry sector is one of the largest and most polluting in the world.

The United States, China and India emit the largest greenhouse gases in the world, and while the US administration is determined to pass stricter climate regulations, other countries fear economic harm as a result.

It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.

In addition, the arrival of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi in Scotland has raised the possibility that he will be arrested, due to the execution of thousands of Iranian opposition activists carried out during his tenure as head of the judiciary in the country.

Demonstrations by Iranian exiles took place in Britain against the arrival of Raisi, known as the "Tehran executioner", to attend the conference.

In Britain itself, too, the incident caused friction between the Conservative ruling party and the Scottish National Party, after the party's leader and Scottish Autonomous Government, Nicolas Sturgeon, claimed that the London government was working to reduce the Scottish presence at the conference.

"We must work together to increase the contribution to reducing global warming. Everyone, a prime minister or a member of parliament, who allows politics to hurt the Metaka, is being held accountable," the Scottish leader wrote in a tweet.
