Brazil's Senate Commission of Inquiry yesterday (Tuesday) approved a report calling on President Jair Bolsonaro to be prosecuted for his treatment of the corona plague, including crimes against humanity.

More than 600,000 people have died in Brazil from the coronavirus, the lowest number in the United States alone.

However, Bolsonaro is unlikely to stand trial, as Brazil's attorney general, whom he has appointed to the post, will have to confirm the charges against him.

The Attorney General's Office said it would closely examine the conclusions of the report after receiving it.

The report, which is more than 1,300 pages long, has been compiled by the opposition-controlled committee for about six months.

In addition to nine charges against the far-right president, the report included allegations of violations of the law by 77 other people - including three of the president's sons - and two different companies.

According to the report, Bolsonaro's government encouraged the spread of corona in the country in hopes of achieving "herd immunity."

Bolsonaro, who himself fell ill in Corona, has been described as "the central person responsible for mistakes made by the federal government during the epidemic."

In the draft report released last week there was a recommendation to prosecute Bolsonaro for genocide and murder, but later the senators decided to dismiss those allegations due to "technical reasons", they said. They also decided to add ten people to the list of recommendations for indictments. One of them is Wilson Lima, the governor of the state of Amazonas, where Corona patients suffocated to death due to lack of oxygen supply in hospitals. His government is under federal investigation on suspicion of corruption while purchasing medical equipment.

"The chaos of Jair Bolsonaro's government will be recorded in history as the lowest human poverty," attacked Senator Renan Calhairos, the report's author. He added that the president is in line with dictators like Nazi Germany leader Adolf Hitler and dictator Chile Augusto Pinochet. He asked to submit the report to the International Criminal Court, of which Brazil is a member, but it is a long and complicated process and it is not at all certain that the Hague will hear it.

Bolsonaro had previously described the Senate inquiry as a "joke" and claimed it was a political persecution.

However, the report illustrates the growing isolation of Bolsonaro ahead of next year's election, in which he will face former left-wing president Lola da Silva, who wins first place in the polls.

Its popularity has plummeted due to the Corona epidemic rampage and high inflation.
