Campus World｜"Mobile Testing Learning Project" X STEM to inspire students' interest in scientific research

The words "detection", "virus" and "protection" have been surrounding our lives for more than a year.

A group of Taoist Qingsong Primary School (Hujing Village) (hereinafter referred to as: Hu Elementary School) students become small test students, participate in the "Mobile Testing Learning Program" co-operated by the school and the Cattagene research company, to learn about the new coronavirus disease and be a good individual Protection, and how to detect viruses from a scientific research perspective.

Scientific principles are not boring at all!

The "Mobile Testing Learning Program" is divided into two parts.

The first part is a learning activity in the form of "Learning by doing" (Learning by doing).

Through different interactive games, the students of Lake Primary School deepened their understanding of the dangers of infectious diseases and methods of prevention.

Students use styrofoam balls and woolen wire to make a virus model to understand the composition and structure of the virus.

The students made the model very carefully. The virus gene-ribonucleic acid (RNA) is installed in the core of the virus, and antigens (spindle protein) of different shapes are created on the surface of the virus.

After students have a preliminary understanding of the structure of the virus, they will be taught the interaction between antibodies and viral antigens, so that students can more easily understand the principle of rapid antigen testing and how antibodies of the immune system prevent the coronavirus from invading the human host with its spike protein cell.

Let's do it together-anti-epidemic handrub

In order for a group of elementary school students to learn about different epidemic prevention-related tools from a scientific point of view, the students will personally make handrubs and learn the uses and principles of each ingredient.

From the perspective of scientific research, it will also be explored to use hand rub or soap to clean hands more effectively to eliminate the virus.

Jump on the detection car to beat the child's scientific research pulse

"Detection" is an important part of epidemic prevention. Fast and accurate detection can identify hidden patients as soon as possible and effectively cut off the chain of transmission in the community.

The second part of the learning program is a guided tour to lead students to experience the entire testing process in a mobile laboratory that reaches biosafety level two. Our students also come into contact with the portable nucleic acid detection analyzer developed by the team of Professor Wen Weijia from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Let students witness the importance of scientific research to society, enhance students' interest in scientific research, and make science and technology take root down!

This study plan allows Hu primary school students to experience the important relationship between scientific research and daily life, and to inspire students' interest in science and scientific research.

Through the "Mobile Testing and Learning Program", our students can consolidate their knowledge and skills in epidemic prevention.

The course is simple and profound. The students actively participated, talked about it, and experienced an unprecedented STEM course.

In addition to letting students enjoy the fun of science, what is more important is to promote them to fight the epidemic through practical solutions, apply what they have learned in their daily lives, and get their lives back on track.
