Heavy storms have struck parts of Sicily since Sunday.

The second largest city of Catania at the foot of Mount Etna was partially flooded.

Civil protection is looking for missing people, at least two people have died, one of whom was found in Scordia in eastern Sicily.

Salvo Cocina, Civil Protection Sicily: »We have found the man's body, but not that of the woman.

They left their car a kilometer from here.

Yesterday 250 millimeters of rain had fallen, an enormous amount.

The water has flooded the streets.

That's why they may have left the car in a panic, they could have stayed in it.

And then they were probably torn away by the enormous masses of water. "

Catania's central streets became rivers and public squares became lakes.

The electricity went out, houses and businesses were full of water and mud.

Schools were closed in several places on Wednesday.

Ferry connections failed, there were landslides.

Catania's mayor Salvo Pogliese instructed its citizens to stay in their houses and wrote on Facebook that there had never been storms of this magnitude here.

The sea is eight degrees warmer than normal at this time of year.

Sicily could experience such weather extremes even more frequently in the future: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change sees the Mediterranean as a »hotspot of climate change«.
