In times when living in Munich is becoming more and more expensive, cooperatives are never in demand. The oldest organization of this kind - in the city as well as all of Germany - celebrates its 150th anniversary today. The "
Building Cooperative of Munich 1871
" was founded on October 28th. There is a special birthday present: two new houses with 95 apartments are being built in Blumenau. “Good, safe and affordable apartments for the cooperative members,” says board member Sandra Marko. This order is the constant in the history of the cooperative. Today it comprises 942 apartments and 1,400 members - and can offer average rents of six euros per square meter. There is correspondingly great interest in Munich, where three times the rental price is completely normal on the free market.
New members cannot be accepted
At the moment there are no free places: Neither are new members accepted, nor can you reserve them.
The traditional cooperative is not alone with this approach, according to the
Association of Bavarian Housing Companies (VdW)
.
"Most of the cooperatives have now closed their waiting lists or don't have any anymore because it is no longer manageable," explains VdW director Hans Maier.
If you will, one thing has changed little since the cooperatives were founded in the 19th century: Back then, the organizations were a response to the housing shortage in large cities.
And even today, affordable apartments are in short supply ...
