Last Sunday, after years of renovation, the Schleswig Cathedral was reopened with a festive service.

At the weekend, the celebrations move into the next round with a journey of light.

Schleswig - For two weeks from Saturday onwards, the reopening of the Schleswig Cathedral will be celebrated with events and light installations by the Hamburg artist Katrin Bethge.

Every day in the evenings people are invited to visit the cathedral and be fascinated by the illuminations, announced the bishop's office.

"After the renovation is complete, we want to open the doors of the cathedral to many people from near and far," said the bishop in the Schleswig and Holstein district, Gothart Magaard, according to the announcement.

He hopes that people will take the time to let the church work on them.

St. Petri Cathedral was reopened on Sunday after almost four years of renovation, including a festive church service and an organ concert. The renovation of the cathedral began in 2017. The main focus of the work was, among other things, the west facade and the 112 meter high church tower. A lot of moisture penetrated the nave here. The masonry, which was up to two meters thick, was partly not only damp, but also wet to the point of saturation. Not only the building itself, but also the large organ and many works of art, including the Brüggemann Altar, were at risk. Due to the construction work, the cathedral had to be closed completely for several months. After that, the work inside the cathedral ran parallel to the church.

Bethge had already designed the cathedral with her light art in 2016 during a four-week “light journey” to kick off the Reformation year.

In the current light journey, the artist is based on the information provided by the numerous figurative representations in the cathedral, for example in the altar and in the windows.
