The new President of the Bundestag Bärbel Bas (SPD) wants to make the promotion of women in politics one of her priorities.
Perhaps she could help "encourage many women to run for candidates, to get involved in politics," Bas said on Tuesday evening on the television program "RTL Direkt".
One topic is the compatibility of family and politics.
Many women with families have been reluctant to take on political office, said the 53-year-old.
"And I want to give a little support and encouragement with myself."
Bas also spoke about her political goals in the ARD “Tagesthemen”.
The promotion of women was "an important task" for her in her office, she explained.
It is important to »make women visible« in all areas.
Bas was elected President on Tuesday in the constituent session of the 20th German Bundestag.
After Annemarie Renger (SPD) and Rita Süssmuth (CDU), she is only the third woman to head the Bundestag.
79.6 percent of the MPs voted for the Social Democrat Bas.
It replaces the CDU politician Wolfgang Schäuble.
"It is good for our country when the citizens see that a woman is responsible at the heart of democracy," said Bas after her election.
The strongest parliamentary group in the Bundestag traditionally has the top position in parliament.
That’s the SPD after the federal election.
Bas also promised non-partisan administration.
The 53-year-old praised the fact that the new parliament was, on the one hand, particularly young and, on the other hand, particularly diverse.
"Diversity is an opportunity for all of us," said the SPD politician.
At the same time, she campaigned for greater proximity to the citizen: with a language without complicated technical jargon and citizens' councils as a form of participation by society.
