The new squirrel bridges over a busy street in Trier are well used by the rodents: This is proven by a game camera that regularly takes photos of the croissants on the thick rope, the city of Trier announced on Wednesday.
The animals are, however, "a bit camera shy": Most of the time, only the bushy tail or the ears can be seen.
Trier - there is still no “selfie”.
But it is only a matter of time before there is also a photo in which a squirrel is looking directly into the camera, it said.
The bridges are each eight centimeters thick rope that is stretched across a road between two trees.
The crossings have been in operation since the end of September.
The city is pleased that the ropes are so well received: "The resident who came up with the idea for the squirrel bridge tells us that far fewer animals are killed on the street," said Valentin Benzkirch from the Urban Space Office.

And the next bridge is already being planned: In Trier-Süd, squirrels will soon be able to safely cross the “An der Härenwies” street to get to an allotment garden.
