Not Just the Budget: A Brief History of the Promises Torch Breached Israel today

2021-10-27T21:02:03.997Z

The issue of raising soldiers' salaries, through the number of chairs around the cabinet table, and ending with budget transfers • The replacement prime minister leaves behind a trail of unfulfilled promises • Even his party is already saying: "It is difficult to justify this"

On the right, Naftali Bennett and Ayelet Shaked are sharply criticized for violating wholesale promises from the election period ("We will not sit with Lapid, Meretz or Abbas"), but another key figure in the government who violates election promises is Yair Lapid and his party has a future.

More precisely - not only do they not keep their promises, they act in a way that is completely contrary to those promises.

The climax, it seems, comes with the budget approval that also includes the transfer of “coalition funds”.

In the past, Lapid has sharply attacked this method.

Another aspect that contradicts the promises of Yesh Atid is the transfer of a particularly high amount to the meeting budget - an issue that has been at the core of the party's campaign for many years.

Yesh Atid is considered a united and disciplined party - but now party officials who spoke with "Israel Today" in the last day already admit: "It will be difficult to explain and justify what is happening. It is becoming more complicated."

The party received NIS 40 million in coalition funds, and MKs in the party received additional funds for distribution at their discretion. Lapid himself sharply attacked the transfer of funds in the past, saying:

What happens in this building every time you try to pass a budget is that you have to distribute money for hobbies to Knesset members.

We remember the sights of the previous budget, sitting at night in a finance committee, throwing money at each other.

It can not last.

It is forbidden.

"It is forbidden to transfer money to MKs. It is not normal, it is not healthy, it produces murky agreements, it corrupts the political system."

The soldiers were forgotten again

If the issue of coalition funds was not enough, the finance committee headed by a Knesset member from Lieberman's party transferred a particularly large sum to none other than the meeting budget.

This is an issue around which Lapid and Lieberman have focused their election campaign for many years.

The two will now transfer more than one billion and 100 million shekels to the meeting budget.

This is an amount that is only about 5% lower than in the previous government, in which the representatives of the ultra-Orthodox parties served.

The salaries of conscripts, as well as guaranteeing a central election for the two, are not currently a budgetary source.

Even the ultra-Orthodox MKs said yesterday that they are surprised and even satisfied with the amount given to the meeting budget.

In fact, since the formation of the government, the people of Yesh Atid have systematically acted against their promises.

Substitute Prime Minister Lapid has previously spoken out against the substitute prime minister's institution, which he called "scribbles, a substitute shadow, a substitute convoy" - and promised to abolish it.

He also promised to form a government with 18 ministers, but the current government has 27 ministers and a large number of deputy ministers.

As you may recall, in the past, Lapid also attacked appointments to the positions of minister without portfolio.

In 2017, he said, "This coming Sunday, MK Ayub will call a minister without a portfolio," adding, "He will have a minister's office, a minister's driver, a minister's spending budget, a minister's travel and a minister's salary.

He will have only one thing: a job. "A few months ago, Lapid, who is the head of the left-wing bloc in the government, arranged for Eli Avidar to be appointed minister without portfolio.

Lapid is followed by a host of other promises and statements on the issue of raising the salaries of soldiers that were not fulfilled, entanglement around the non-appointment of Elazar Stern as chairman of the agency and more.
