Railway slows down Herrsching

The commissioning of the second main S-Bahn line in Munich is an important date for Herrsching too.

Important decisions are on hold because it has not yet been clarified when, how and whether or not a railway underpass will be built at the Rieder Straße crossing.

In the local council meeting on Monday, the topic popped up on the sidelines.

In fact, December is an important date.

Herrsching

- Should the second main line go into operation as currently planned in 2028, this would have serious consequences for Herrsching as the terminus. According to forecasts, the railway barrier on Rieder Straße will then close every five minutes. Anyone can imagine what this means for the flow of traffic. A complete plan “to remove the level crossing in Herrsching” - a railway underpass - has been in place since 2012. Many measures are on hold until then, because if the underpass is to be built, for example, communal land is required from the area on which the former Bofrost hall stands. Mayor Christian Schiller explains in an interview with Starnberger Merkur that he did not take up the topic again until the spring, after the local council had asked, whether affordable housing or space for refugee accommodation is possible there. At the time, the responsible state building authority in Weilheim was waiting for a closing schedule for the railway, which should provide information about how long a passage is actually closed to road traffic. The information is the basis for planning. To this day, however, this plan is not available. After two deadlines had already been missed by Deutsche Bahn, the next one was scheduled for the beginning of December, Schiller announced at the meeting when it came to leaving the industrial area (see box). Because this traffic situation is also not insignificantly influenced by the barriers. At the time, the responsible state building authority in Weilheim was waiting for a closing schedule for the railway, which should provide information about how long a passage is actually closed to road traffic. Depending on the construction of an underpass, traffic calming on the side streets such as Madeleine-Ruoff-Straße or a crossing aid for secondary school students who walk to and from the S-Bahn like lemmings on weekdays is also required.

A lot has to be solved, and time is of the essence, says Schiller.

Because if an underpass is to be built, a plan approval procedure is necessary, which takes about two years.

The construction time would probably take another two years.
