Seven rare bald ibises have been brought from the Berlin zoo to be reintroduced to southern Spain.
By the time the birds are to be released on the Atlantic coast at the end of December, the animals in the Zoobotánico Jerez will get used to the new environment, as the zoo announced on Wednesday.
Berlin - “We are very pleased that we can continue to follow the development of our young birds, whose growth we have accompanied since they hatched.
Some of the animals will be equipped with GPS transmitters, ”said the responsible curator Matthias Papies according to the announcement.
Another five breeding pairs currently live in the Berlin zoo.
According to information, there are currently more than 2000 bald ibises in zoos and animal parks around the world.
In the wild, the species is now considered extinct in Europe.
The conservationists at BirdLife International have the bald ibises on the Red List, which was published just under two weeks ago.
