The Europeans agreed at the end of last week, at a summit in Brussels, on a common line in the face of the questioning of the rule of EU law by the Polish government: dialogue rather that climbing.
It got off to a bad start.
The EU Court of Justice on Wednesday ordered Poland to pay € 1 million per day to the Commission for failing to suspend the activities of the disciplinary chamber of the Supreme Court.
The decision took effect immediately and will apply until Warsaw gives in to Brussels.
European justice
"operates outside its jurisdiction and abuses the institution of financial penalties and provisional measures",
responded Sebastian Kaleta, the Polish Secretary of State for Justice.

This sanction is the consequence of the standoff in which the Commission is engaged to force Warsaw to reconsider several aspects of the reform of justice and, especially on this chamber.
