The construction of the rain retention basin southwest of the recycling yard is the first major measure in the course of the local flood protection program.

After lengthy and complex planning, construction work on the 3.5 million euro pool has now begun.

Peißenberg - One thing is certain: Nothing happens quickly with the planning process for flood protection. The government mills grind slowly - very slowly. This is no different with Peißenberg flood protection. It has been 15 years since the municipality, in cooperation with the Weilheim Water Management Office, obtained initial offers for the creation of a planning concept. Countless engineering calculations, expert reports, cost calculations and plan variants followed. It was only when the planning approval procedure for the rain retention basin southwest of the recycling yard began in August 2018 that there was light at the end of the tunnel, at least for the “Peißenberg-Süd” flood protection.

Last week the community was finally able to hold the official groundbreaking ceremony.

The construction companies have started the earthworks on the open space between the former BHS site and the former Grillo parking lot.

A serpentine-shaped driveway to Hochreuther Strasse was specially paved for construction site traffic.

Mayor Frank Zellner was relieved to see the start of construction at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Most recently, the town hall administration had waited for a stamp from the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment.

"It is a very special event", explained Zellner in his "groundbreaking speech": "After all, it is the first major construction project for the Peißenberg flood protection."

The key data for the retention basin are quite impressive: after its completion, the structure will have a storage capacity of 44,000 cubic meters on a storage area of 18,000 square meters. This corresponds to the standard of a 100-year flood plus ten percent climate surcharge. After the inlet, the water is dosed back to the Stadelbach in heavy rain events via a throttle structure. The 500 meter long dam will have a height of 5.4 meters and a bulk volume of 47,000 cubic meters of earth material. The volume is roughly equivalent to 3500 truck loads.

Thanks to the retention basin and various waterway developments along the Stadelbach (including on Schachtstrasse), "Peißenberg-Süd" and especially the shopping park on Hochreuther Strasse should be largely protected from flooding. According to the current calculations, the basin will also have a positive effect on Peißenberg's northern district: "It will bring a little something," said building authority employee Thomas Schamper on the sidelines of the groundbreaking ceremony.

But now it's the construction companies' turn.

“We are all looking forward to the day on which the building will be handed over to its intended purpose,” explained Zellner.

The day long awaited by the town hall chief will be 2023 according to the schedule.

Including the expansion of the watercourse on the Stadelbach, the “Peißenberg-Süd” rainwater retention basin will cost around four million euros.

Overall, the municipality is calculating flood protection structures at over 20 million euros over the next few years.

"These are high investments, but they are necessary," emphasized Zellner: "We as a community will be able to deal with the burdens - and we will have to."
