Recommendations for action from the flood disaster in the Ahr valley with 134 deaths want to work out a study commission of the state parliament.

This involves both disaster control and adaptation to climate change and reconstruction.

With the support of six experts, eleven members of parliament and government representatives want to first examine the reasons, the course and the consequences of the devastating flood around three months ago.

Mainz - The recommendations are to be developed on this basis.

"No paper tiger should be produced", stressed the commission chairman Lea Heidbreder in the first meeting of the commission on Wednesday in the Mainz state parliament. The green MP had previously been unanimously elected to head the body. She praised the broad expertise of the representatives and emphasized that the work of the commission is a joint task across political groups. “In the Ahr valley, the people have shown solidarity,” said Heidbreder. "We should take this as an example."

Heidbreder, MPs from all other parliamentary groups and the President of the State Parliament Hendrik Hering (SPD) recalled the terrible events of the flood disaster from July 14th to 15th and its consequences and emphasized the responsibility towards the people affected.

Everyone is aware that it will be a long time before "something like normality" returns to the Ahr Valley, said Hering.

"Psychological wounds will remain and they will never completely heal."
