Metroid Dread (Nintendo)

The Metroid series is one of the oldest and most popular in the gaming world and of Nintendo in particular, and it has been quite some time since the last title the series saw.

After 20 years of development, a rumor mill about the plot, and a kind of stay in Limbo for over a decade, the infamous new game finally got the green light for development in the hands of the Mercury Steam team, who also developed the Nintendo 3DS remake of the series - Samus Returns.

So a few years of work went underground, and Nintendo apparently realized that Mercury Steam had succeeded in the mission with the first title they had developed, and with the announcement of the new version of the hybrid console, the Nintendo Switch OLED, the technology giant from Japan announced the fourth, intriguing and mysterious Metroid Dread Will be launched together with the new version of the console

(which we also wrote about this week and you can read it by clicking here).

In terms of gameplay and gameplay, Metroid Dread is essentially a classic Metrodivenia game, so it's a two-dimensional game, where the characters move from one room to another, with several rooms connected together to create entire areas that also connect to each other. Yes, those who did not know the term understood correctly: Metroid games have created their own sub-genre in the world of platform games. Just one example of why this old series is so significant. So in every area of the game there are areas where all kinds of special treasures are hidden, and the principle is simple: you fight, you die, and so the melody returns.

In terms of gameplay plot, Metroid Dread continues in the line of its predecessor in the series, Metroid Fusion, which came out at the beginning of the millennium, and is the last part in the two-dimensional games of the classic series.

The swan song of the series if you will.

Like every other title in the series you will play Samos Arn, the best warrior across the galaxy.

Samos arrives at the new mast that she will investigate, after in the previous game she allegedly destroyed all the terrible Matroids, but as always, a big and tough surprise awaits her.

Although this is my first Metroid game, but I did my homework to get a general picture of the story in the game series, and as a player entering the series for the first time - the game story was fun and had a pretty good narrative, but the plot is probably not what will sweep The actors, but the gameplay itself.

One of the most special elements of Dread, of course, is in the form of the deadly robots that go by the name EMMI. These are special robots that no weapon in Samos' fairly wide arsenal of weapons can harm. Throughout the game, we will meet one such enemy in each area, within a defined area that each time managed to scare me anew.

When we enter that same danger zone, the EMMIs will not stop chasing us until we get out of their area of control. Another element that adds to the difficulty of the terrible encounters against them is the fact that unlike all the other enemies in the game, which give us the option to use a counter (counterattack) against them, the EMMI gives us no mark before attacking us, and the timing of their attack is completely random, so That we can not also rely on attempts from previous encounters with them and there is no fixed behavioral pattern. Just a nightmare, but especially fun.

There are not many Metroid Prime-style games that feature such smooth and responsive control.

It does not feel like it is limiting the player, and still manages to keep up with the dizzying pace of action that the game allows to perform.

If you open YouTube you will see quite a few players playing in a way that makes Samos look unstoppable, and throughout the game the players will gain a considerable arsenal of weapons and abilities with which they can go back and discover places that were blocked at the beginning of the game. That we can perform a combination of actions in order to create the best warrior we can.

This is a formula that is very reminiscent of games like Microsoft's beautiful Ori series, but as we mentioned, let's not forget where the roots of the genre started.

An example of the smooth and great control that the game provides

This is a game that will reach a normative rate of progress in 8-10 hours, depending on the level of difficulty you choose, and do not get confused - this is a pretty difficult game. If you're the type of player who will not go back every time to areas you have already passed and will not discover secret objects and bosses in different areas of the game, and if New Game + mode speaks less to you, consider: It is a short but challenging experience.

Is this really the right game to "sell" the new OLED switch? I think the answer is an unequivocal yes. Technically, this is a game that is no less a marvel of optimization of the game developers. It's a game that runs almost perfectly on top of all existing versions of the Switch (the standard version, the Switch Lite and the new OLED) at 60 frames per second, and graphically Dread tops the list of the most beautiful games released for Nintendo's hybrid console.

The game that features a host of impressive models for every enemy and character in the game, and of course Samos' model and her suit have never looked so good, while the new game world is gloomier and scarier than ever.

In terms of matching the game to OLED, it is a perfect pairing, and the game showcases the new OLED screen capabilities in the best way.

The game world is made up of seven different areas, with each area featuring a completely different color palette, different enemies, and unique environmental elements like fire, ice and water. The ability of the OLED screen to display such a high range of contrasts and colors compared to the LCD screen of previous versions, makes the game look no less perfect, and in my opinion it is the most beautiful game that went to the switch along with games like Zelda Breath of the wild, and both are the -Best games showcase the capabilities of the OLED.

Another element that is completely technically noteworthy, is in the field of sound of the game: In terms of sound mixing, and sound engineering, this is perhaps the most impressive game that came out of the switch: it puts a very big emphasis on audio cues on the switch, and we We will be able to identify where the terrible enemies are, the EMMIs that are chasing us along the many rooms in the game. This is a pitchA real R. who builds quite a bit of tension when we try to hide from these deadly robots.

In addition, if you are a headphone player, here too the sound is particularly noticeable, and Dread's sound engineers have done their magic and the game provides a pretty wide spectrum that manages to create Imaging (position simulation) with a pretty accurate sound so we can identify the danger ahead and from which direction We will find it with the help of the sound we get from the game itself.

In conclusion

I think Metroid Dread is the best 2D platformer game since Dead Cells came out a few years ago.

This is a particularly difficult and suspenseful game, which justifies the use of the word Dread (horror / fear) in its name, with the help of using a new breed of unique enemies that provide a particularly unique gameplay experience.

If you are looking for a game to buy before the upcoming Halloween, or looking for the 2021 game of the year for the Nintendo Switch, I think Metroid Dread is the game for you.
