We immediately think of Visconti's great film, its sumptuous images, the story illuminated by the presence of Alain Delon, Claudia Cardinale and Burt Lancaster.
The feature film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1963. We all remember it.
But fewer of us remember that this film was born out of a literary masterpiece published in 1958 in Italy.
The author has remained in the shadows: Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa.
And this documentary pays homage to him.
Reversal of an order
The 52 minutes directed by Luigi Falorni is all the more edifying as it shows how much the famous novel is also somewhat the story of its author.
This aristocrat born in Palermo, in 1896, is covered with titles: baron of Montechiaro (a castle in ruins), prince of Lampedusa (his palace will be destroyed), owner of multiple residences (
“Water flows from the roofs but never from the tap … ”
), Etc.
