El Paso - These are pictures that nobody really needs: four muscular men in tight clothing pose grinning in front of a fire-breathing volcano.

Behind them red-hot lava, smoke and ashes.

In this way, four Englishmen recently caused a stir on La Palma.

The tourists had come specially from Tenerife.

Now, in an interview with the British tabloid Daily Mail, they commented on the reason for their reckless excursion to the volcano: allegedly they wanted to save dogs that were trapped in the area of the Cumbre Vieja volcanic chain.

The men, "all great animal lovers", responded to a call on social networks, one of them says in an interview.

But they would have "definitely underestimated the extent of the damage".

Four men risk their lives

Indeed, the fate of abandoned pets on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram had moved people.

Pictures of the emaciated dogs, which were trapped between lava flows after the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, had caused a sensation on the Internet in the past few days.

After worried appeals from animal rights activists, the Spanish drone company Aerocameras even prepared a rescue operation last week.

The four men's dangerous ascent of the volcano eventually turned into a police evacuation mission.

Two emergency services picked up the tourists and supported them on their descent - after they had suffered from shortness of breath due to the ash rain.

In the five weeks since then, the lava slowly but inexorably buried one building after the other - on Sunday (October 24th, 2021) it was already 2270, as the state TV broadcaster RTVE reported.

For those affected, around 7000 of whom had to leave their homes, it is a slow-motion disaster.
