From next year on, volunteer wolf advisors will no longer be responsible for recording wolf cracks.

The Lower Saxony Ministry of the Environment confirmed this on Wednesday.

Accordingly, the wolf management is to be reorganized: the advisors are to provide more information about the wolf, the Chamber of Agriculture (LWK) is to take over the crack recording in return.

Hanover - “The debate about the wolf is getting more and more emotional.

The wolf advisors are urgently needed here, ”said Environment Minister Olaf Lies (SPD) on Wednesday in Hanover.

The advisors should educate people on site about the animal.

The minister praised the volunteer advisors, some of whom reacted angrily to the change in their field of activity in media reports, as "incredibly committed".

In the future, as in many other federal states, the Chamber of Agriculture is to include Wolfsrisse.

The LWK has been responsible for the processing of so-called cheap services since 2020.

So the partial assumption of costs that arise in a wolf tear.

Now everything will be put into one hand.

There are currently 39 wolf packs living in Lower Saxony, as well as a pair of wolves and two individual wolves. The number of attacks by wolves on grazing animals last rose from eight in 2012 to 230 in the current year. In contrast, there are currently 105 voluntary wolf advisors. That is no longer reasonable, "especially since the distribution of the attacks is not evenly distributed across Lower Saxony and only 10 percent of the wolf advisors look after more than 10 cracks per year," said Lies.

There is currently a debate in Lower Saxony about whether the strictly protected animals should be included in the hunting law, which is what the government groups SPD and CDU as well as the FDP intend to do. The rural people would welcome such an amendment to the law. "We recognize this as a further important step towards active wolf management in the future," said Landvolk Vice President Jörn Ehlers. In addition, he calls for a legal framework that enables stock regulation by means of hunting. The Ministry of the Environment is currently carrying out an expert opinion that could be the basis for a possible upper limit for wolfs. Its purpose is to check how many animals are required to preserve the species.

The BUND criticizes the planned inclusion of the wolf in the hunting law.

It is already possible to shoot problematic animals.

"An extension of the hunting law is therefore neither necessary nor expedient," said Axel Ebeler, deputy BUND state chairman in Lower Saxony.

The BUND also considers the opinion of the Ministry of the Environment to be nonsensical, since the wolf cannot be viewed in isolation in just one federal state.

Dikes are prepared for the storm surge season

Coastal protection is an ongoing task: before storm surges threaten in winter, the last construction sites have to be completed.

In addition, the safety of the dykes will now be checked in autumn.

According to Environment Minister Olaf Lies, more money is needed to counteract the effects of climate change in the future.

Wolves are strictly protected animals.

Official approval is required for a launch.

This would not change either, should the wolf be included in hunting law.
