CAC 40 ESG: the reasons for the “new deal” in September

Barely launched, the “responsible” version of the CAC 40 has already undergone a major overhaul: our explanations. However, the performance of this new stock market index is worth a look.


Selecting the 40 major stocks with the best ESG ratings (environment, social, governance): this is the ambition of the CAC 40 ESG index, launched on March 22.

It brings together the 40 

best rated Parisian

blue chips

by the specialist firm VE (formerly Vigeo Eiris) within the CAC Large 60, which brings together the classic CAC 40 and its antechamber, the CAC Next 20.

A young and changing index

In the initial version, this “responsible” index excluded 9 stocks from the CAC 40 (Airbus, Alstom, ArcelorMittal, Dassault Systèmes, EssilorLuxottica, Hermès, Saint-Gobain, Thales and TotalEnergies) to replace them by Accor, Arkema, EDF, Gecina, Klépierre, Sodexo, Solvay, Suez and Valeo.

But in September, the first annual review of the CAC 40 ESG led, suddenly, to 5 entries and 5 exits.

In September, this resulted in the integration of Bureau Veritas, but also in the rehabilitation of Airbus, Alstom, Hermès and Saint-Gobain, which had been ruled out in March.
