The region that is part of the Esch2022 Capital of Culture project under the motto “Remix Culture” includes, in addition to Esch, ten surrounding Luxembourg municipalities and eight French municipalities belonging to the local government in Audun-le-Tiche.

A total of around 200,000 people from 120 nations live in the area.

"With Esch2022 we want to tell the story of our region from the steel industry to the digital age," said the director of the cultural program, Françoise Poos.

The program includes theater, festivals, exhibitions, dance, performances, workshops and digital art.

The program is scheduled to start on February 22, 2022, with the grand opening on February 26, 2022.

The Mayor of Esch and President of Esch2022, Georges Mischo, said: “The opening ceremony will be something that Luxembourg has never seen before.” The budget for the European Capital of Culture year is 56.5 million euros, of which Luxembourg is 55 million euros .

And: "You can see that Luxembourg is more than just a financial center."

Important exhibition venues will also be in Esch-Belval on a former steelworks site, where the university is today.

There will be media art in a renovated Möllerei: The first exhibition on the program is “Hacking Identity - Dancing Diversity” from the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM).
