North Port - The crime involving Gabby Petito has been making headlines in the United States and far beyond for weeks.
Only a few days ago the fiancé of the violently killed woman was found dead.
The exact background of the two deaths has still not been clarified.
But now investigators admit a mistake.
As the North Port police spokesman Josh Taylor confirmed to a local TV station, the fiancé of the then missing woman was initially mistaken.
One day in September, Petito's friend was probably mistaken for his mother.

The 22-year-old's missing person was reported to the local police on September 11, and the young woman's fiancé also disappeared shortly afterwards.
Because of this, the house of the young man's parents, in which the 23-year-old had also lived, was monitored.
"I think it was his mother who wore a baseball cap," the police spokesman now describes the mix-up.
Investigators assumed that the fiancé had reappeared.
Due to the similar stature, the person with the baseball cap, who got out of the car in front of the house, was identified as a fiancé.
“No case is perfect,” said Taylor.
In the meantime, the fiancé of the young Gabby Petito has been found dead, but the exact background is still unclear.
In September, the 22-year-old Petito had not returned from a trip to the USA, her fiancé was absolutely silent about the whereabouts of the young woman.
Shortly thereafter, Petito's body was found in the state of Wyoming.
