The Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia have probably found their top candidate.

Mona Neubaur is set to score points against Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst in the state elections in May 2022.

Düsseldorf - The Greens have proposed their top candidate for the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Mona Neubaur, state chairwoman of the Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia, is expected to stand for her party in May 2022.

And thus compete with Armin Laschet's successor, new Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst.

The Greens announced this on Thursday in Düsseldorf.

The 44-year-old thanked her party colleagues for their trust.

“It is a great honor for me to take on this responsibility,” she said.

She is tackling the task of achieving the historically best election result for the Greens “with humility, but also with absolute determination and an unconditional will to fight”.

Mona Neubaur should lead Greens in the NRW state election

Neubaur has been leading the party in North Rhine-Westphalia for seven years, together with Felix Banaszak since 2018.

Finally, the state party congress in Siegen in December has to vote on the joint personnel proposal and the election program of the state and parliamentary groups.

According to the announcement, the program proposal with the title “From here to the future” was sent to party members on Thursday.

Neubaur was born in Bavaria, but has lived in North Rhine-Westphalia since 1997.

After graduating, she worked in the energy industry for an alternative energy supplier.

In 2005 she joined the Greens and gave the following reason: "No party has such convincing offers for renewable and democratized energy supply."

Mona Neubaur: Green top candidate wants transformation to renewable energies in NRW

She will be the spokeswoman for the Düsseldorf Greens, and in 2014 she will be the chairwoman of the regional association. According to her own statements, her political focus has so far been on environmental, energy and climate protection as well as mobility and traffic. On the homepage of the Landes-Grünen she writes about herself: “For me, my adopted home North Rhine-Westphalia is above all living diversity - diversity of regions, origins, football clubs, breweries and customs. Tolerance and acceptance of the other is in our DNA - this is an achievement that I want to protect and promote. "

According to Neubaur, NRW is the land of coal and steel.

“It will stay that way - but driven by renewable energies and clean technologies.” With her political work, she wants to shape the transformation in such a way that the people in North Rhine-Westphalia and the environment benefit from it at the same time.

Because she is convinced: "The task of politics is to courageously tackle the challenges." (Fmü // AFP / dpa)
