So-called tasers are to be part of the basic equipment in the five largest police authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia. As Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) said on Thursday in the interior committee of the state parliament, the police officers in Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Essen and Cologne are to be equipped with a total of 620 devices. The electric shock guns have been in test operation since the beginning of the year.

Düsseldorf - Reul emphasized the preventive effect of the distance electro pulse devices (DEIG), as the tasers are officially called.

In the test run it was very often enough just to threaten the use of the devices to keep aggressors at bay.

Specifically, there were 140 missions until the beginning of September, 114 times with the threat of triggering the device.

A DEIG was actually fired 25 times and used once in “contact mode” - like a normal stun gun.
