Opening of the activities of the Mediterranean Day in Lattakia

Under the title (Together to Protect Our Marine Environment), the activities of the Mediterranean Day, organized by the Syrian Coast Association for Environmental Protection in cooperation with a number of activities concerned with the protection and preservation of the environment, opened today in the Cultural Center in Latakia.

Today’s activities dealt with lectures on the reality and ways of preserving the environment, where Dr. Suhair Al Rayes, Chairperson of the Association’s Board of Directors, referred to the new concepts presented to the countries of the Mediterranean basin by international organizations concerned with ocean and sea affairs, which aim to change the daily behavior of individuals with regard to waste dumped on and inside the seashore. And their visual and aesthetic impact as well as on the health of the population and future generations.

Al-Rayes pointed out that the Mediterranean Sea is one of the most polluted seas in the world because it is almost closed and its waters are renewed only every 100 years.

Dr. Amir Ibrahim, Dean of the Higher Institute for Marine Research, referred to the Syrian coast and coastal areas devastated by marine erosion due to the erosion of gravel and sand, and areas threatened by inundation as a result of rising sea levels, which constitute 45.7 km of the Syrian coast and the threat to rivers, where new beaches, barriers and fenders must be formed by Mountain sands resulting from drifts and marine sand carried by the sea itself through certain mechanisms after studying marine currents, pointing out that marine animals are threatened in the Syrian coast, such as turtles, birds, seals and whales. healthy.

Head of the Fisheries Department at the Higher Institute for Marine Research, Dr. Sherine Hussein, and Deputy Dean of the Higher Institute for Marine Research indicated that the factors affecting fish stocks are natural and human factors. Overfishing and contributing to environmental pollution, which requires the implementation of recommendations related to determining appropriate seasons for fishing, determining the size of fishing nets openings, and preventing the use of illegal fishing methods.

Dr. Bashar Badour, a researcher in the Environment Directorate, drew attention to the role of home gardens in sustainable development in terms of mitigating climate change through the biological storage of carbon by photosynthesis of plants, preserving fertile moist soil, reducing soil erosion, providing environmental diversity, reducing insect pests, and securing food throughout the year.

It is noteworthy that the activities of the Mediterranean Day tomorrow include organizing a collective cleaning campaign for the southern corniche as a practical activity.
