From summer 2022 there could be long waiting times for holidaymakers at the Austrian border.

Because the state of Salzburg is planning block handling for cars on the Walserberg.

Munich - Nothing went for hours: Numerous trucks jammed * on Wednesday (October 27th) for 50 kilometers in the Inn Valley on the Autobahn 8 in the direction of Austria *. The reason was the block processing at the border after the Austrian national holiday on Tuesday. With the measure at the Kufstein-Kiefersfelden border crossing, Tyrol wants to limit truck traffic on the Inntal and Brenner route on particularly busy days.

Even the police speak of a "traffic jam of enormous proportions" that "has never happened before".

In the meantime, the officials prevented the trucks at the Inntal triangle from driving onto the autobahn in order to rectify the situation.

Complicating the block handling was the fact that there were also two traffic accidents with trucks.

"A chain of unfortunate circumstances," said a spokesman for the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria South.

Austria: Block handling for cars

A bitter foretaste of 2022: Because the State of Salzburg is planning - in addition to block handling for trucks - to lock out holidaymakers from the summer.

If it is up to the will of Transport Minister Stefan Schnöll, block processing for cars will also take place on the weekends in summer 2022.

Despite the departure blocks introduced in 2019, which were also strictly controlled by private security services in 2021, traffic on the state roads away from the motorways increased dramatically this summer, according to the Regional Transport Council.

Stefan Schnöll speaks of 60 percent more, there are no concrete figures.

Vacationers from Bavaria “roll over” the Austrian border

"Many holidaymakers coming from Bavaria are already driving straight over the Kleine Walserberg onto the state road," believes a spokesman for the regional transport council.

The two long summer construction sites on the Tauern motorway also contributed to the fact that many did not even drive on the motorway.

"They rolled over us this year," says the spokesman.

His suggestion: the holiday caravan would have to be dosed at the Walserberg.

Schnöll is particularly afraid of the next two summers because Asfinag is renovating several tunnels in the Werfen area.

Block handling on the Walserberg

The ÖAMTC motorist club sees the idea of block processing on the Walserberg as differentiated.

"There was an unwanted block clearance at Walserberg this summer because of the Corona * entry controls, when the traffic jam reached back to Anger on the German A8," says Aloisia Gurtner.

But block handling occurred several times at the Hiefler Tunnel due to congestion.

The fact that the country now wants block clearance in front of the Walserberg shows that the exit barriers are obviously not working, according to the ÖAMTC spokeswoman.
