Rome is preparing for protests because of the upcoming G20 summit.

An XXL security strategy should protect the city from riot and chaos.

  • The G20 summit will take place in Rome this year.

Among others, US President Joe Biden * will take part.

  • The security forces in the capital of Italy are preparing for violent rioting.

  • The meeting of heads of state and government will primarily focus on the fight against climate change and the corona pandemic.

Rome - The most important economic powers come together in Rome at the weekend.

The G20 summit will begin on Saturday (October 30th, 2021) when the heads of state and government will mainly discuss the global corona pandemic and the global climate crisis.

The first bilateral and preparatory talks will take place on Friday, after which the finance and health ministers will discuss the recovery of the global economy in the context of the corona crisis in advance.

Finance Minister Olaf Scholz * (SPD) will also be represented.

G20 summit in Rome: XXL security concept against rioting

The first protests against the G20 summit in Rome are expected on Friday.

But the city feels armed: Italy wants to prevent excesses and chaos in Rome with an XXL security concept.

Rioting and images such as 2001 in Genoa or 2017 in Hamburg should be avoided.

So far, the police say they have not assumed that there are many violent demonstrators arriving from abroad.

However, tensions in Italy have recently intensified during the many protests against the Corona policy * by Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

There were repeated police operations.

The G20 summit is to be protected with 5296 additional security forces, including 500 soldiers.

This means that around 2000 soldiers will be in the city, generally guarding important buildings such as ministries, embassies and sights.

Joe Biden, President of the USA *, has also already traveled to Italy * and will be attending the summit.

In addition, Italy reintroduced border controls a few days ago.

The Ministry of the Interior announced that it will be checked until 1:00 p.m. on Monday.

A no-fly zone has also been set up, the airspace is monitored by a special military unit, and two dozen helicopters are said to be circling over Rome.

G20 summit in Rome: main day of protest probably Saturday with Fridays for Future

The G20 conference center Nuvola and the congress palace with the press center are located in the district called EUR - which is considered the prestige object of the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini *.

The EUR is largely cordoned off by a "red zone" - snipers are posted on the roofs, the fire brigade is on site with equipment against chemical and biological weapons.

The main day of the protests is likely to be Saturday, when a rally by the “Rifondazione Comunista” party takes place and shortly afterwards a demonstration march in which groups such as the climate initiative Fridays for Future and trade unions want to take part.

Around 10,000 participants are expected.

G20 summit in Rome: Avoid images like the G20 in Hamburg

The massive security precautions can be explained by the experiences at international summits of the last decades.

Again and again there have been violent riots, especially at summits in Europe.

It was exactly 20 years ago that the 23-year-old Italian student Carlo Giuliani was shot by a police officer in a street battle on the sidelines of the G8 summit in Genoa.

In 2017 in Hamburg, around 31,000 police officers were on duty at the G20 *.

Nevertheless, there were riots, numerous property damage and looting.

Hundreds of people were injured in riots and police assaults, and the police were subsequently admitted to be complicit in the escalations.
