The United States yesterday (Thursday) imposed sanctions on two senior Lebanese businessmen and a member of parliament close to Hezbollah, who it claims are involved in widespread corruption that has undermined the rule of law in the country.



Businessmen Jihad al-Arab and Danny Khoury, who are close to former Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri and Christian politician Jabran Basil, have been punished by the US Treasury Department for their involvement in corruption in government centers.

The two, according to the U.S. Treasury Department, have won hundreds of millions of dollars in government contracts, including for garbage collection and removal work, thanks to their political ties.



US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken described the sanctions as "an important step for Lebanon's accountability."
