Inferior in the inner-party power struggle, Jörg Meuthen retires as AfD boss. Before leaving, he calls for a complete new start at the party leadership - instead of "always the same faces".

The outgoing AfD chairman Jörg Meuthen has spoken out in favor of an exchange of the entire party leadership.

"The previous federal spokesmen and deputies should make way for completely new people in the AfD," he told the "Welt am Sonntag".

If you look at the history of the party, "you always find the same faces".

Meuthen no longer wants to run for the new election of the party leadership at the party congress in December.

"I would like other board members to do the same," he told the newspaper.

The egos of individuals shouldn't stand in the way of the success of the whole thing, said Meuthen.

"We have undecided questions of fundamental importance"

He also called for a programmatic renewal of the AfD.

"We have undecided questions of fundamental importance," he said.

For example, the AfD's basic program states that Germany's exit from the EU is only the last resort (the very last solution).

But the "Dexit" is called for in the Bundestag election program.

"For example, I would like some clarification as to where the party stands on this question."

Should the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution classify the entire AfD as a suspected case, from Meuthen's point of view this would be "a very serious threat to the party."

Above all, this could induce civil libertarian members to leave.

"And that could set a development in motion in the AfD in which the suspected case classification would then become a self-fulfilling prophecy."

Meuthen had announced in October that he would withdraw from the party leadership and not want to run again as chairman at the party congress in December.

It was also a capitulation in the face of the advance of the Volkish-nationalist wing of the party.

Meuthen was considered the last prominent representative of the more moderate forces in the AfD (read more here).

He lost the power struggle within the party and drew the consequences.

His demand that the rest of the party leadership should also go can therefore also be interpreted as the last maneuver in the conflict.
