US President Joe Biden met last night (Friday) in Rome with French President Emmanuel Macron and admitted to him that the United States had behaved "awkwardly" in its handling of the submarine deal it signed with Australia. The deal led to the cancellation of the sale of submarines from France to Australia for tens of billions of euros, creating a crisis between the two old allies.

Biden and Macron met for the first time since the outbreak of the crisis in September. Although the American president did not officially apologize to Macron, he admitted that the United States should not have caught the French by surprise. "I was under the impression that France had been updated long before that," Biden said.

At the end of the meeting, the French president said he believed Biden had spoken honestly when he claimed he thought France had received early information about the deal with Australia. "We are rebuilding trust. Trust is like love. The statement is good, but the proof is better." Earlier, Macron said: "We clarified at the meeting what needed to be clarified. What matters now is what we will do together in weeks,The coming months and years. "

At the meeting, the two discussed other issues, including Iran, Afghanistan, China, cooperation in the Indo-Pacific sector, as well as climate change, ahead of the summit in Glasgow next week.

Macron also praised the United States' assistance in France's fight against Islamic terrorists in the Sahel region of Africa.

The crisis began with the signing of the submarine agreement between the United States and Australia, a move that led to the cancellation of an agreement between Australia and France.

France in response returned its ambassador from Washington.

Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian accused Biden of stabbing France in the back.

He compared his conduct to that of his predecessor as Donald Trump.

"This cruel, one-sided and unexpected decision reminds me very much of what Trump did to us," the secretary of state said.

"It's a betrayal of trust."

Biden, in an attempt to soften anger in France, said she was "a partner and a key ally".
