Opinion | Climate Conference: Opportunity and Awakening Israel today

2021-10-30T20:38:38.602Z

Because it is more affected by the climate crisis and because of its capabilities as a start-up nation: the location to Israel plays a significant role, much larger than its territory, in dealing with the climate crisis, and an opportunity to be among the leaders

It seems that the insight into the existence of a climate crisis has already become part of the main discourse in Israel, certainly in light of the extreme climate events in recent years and the understanding that for us the climate crisis in particular is a risk and a strategic threat.

Prime Minister Bennett and senior ministers have also spoken on various topics on this issue, the media deals with it almost daily, and there is a feeling that recognition of the existence of a crisis has already seeped into the public and national consciousness. Leaders - including Prime Minister - and activists Global, and it is clear that the readiness, the sense of urgency and the alertness that accompanies it - are more significant than ever.

This is the first conference convened in the shadow of the corona plague, for which it was postponed from last year. This is significant not only in the challenges of global convergence but also in the important lessons taught to us by the plague, chief among them the insight that in order to deal with a global crisis, global mobilization is required. Some will raise an eyebrow and wonder what could be our contribution as a small country to dealing with the crisis, but the opposite is true. Israel has a significant role, much larger than its territory, in dealing with the climate crisis, and an opportunity to be among the leaders.

Due to its geographical location, Israel is affected by the climate crisis more than other countries, and its damage - especially in the form of heat waves - will hurt and harm us more. Already today, Israel is warming at a faster pace than the world average. This reality has serious consequences in every sense, including geopolitical consequences, instability, waves of emissions and a real risk of an all-regional flare-up in the struggle for survival over food and water. Israel has also been blessed with rich, diverse and extraordinary nature on a global scale, as we are the second most important migration route in the world. We have the right and the responsibility to protect it. Remember - natural systems are our main allies in the face of the crisis.

Israel's unique opening data, for better or worse, in dealing with the crisis, and being a start-up nation, together with our unique development challenges as a crowded country in Western countries - create an exceptional opportunity to lead in the development and implementation of advanced and innovative climate crisis solutions. These are solutions based on nature conservation, a wide range of areas: renewable energies, efficient use of water and land resources, restoration and restoration of natural systems, quality urban development that integrates natural systems within the city, advanced nature conservation agriculture, runoff management and more.

A global conference is the place to set the global standard to which countries are committed, and without a global harness - we will not be able to go into crisis.

For Israel, the conference is a wake-up call to bridge the unbearable gap revealed by the State Comptroller's report and align with the countries of the world. We can not only make a change, we must.
