U.S. intelligence agencies have admitted that they may never be able to identify the sources of the corona virus. The conclusion was given in a new and more detailed version of the review they conducted to find out if the virus had passed through animals to humans or leaked from a laboratory. The unclassified report released by the United States National Intelligence Agency states that a natural transmission of the virus or a leak from a laboratory are two possible theories as to how the virus first infected humans. However, the report states that experts disagree on which of the two is a more plausible theory or whether any definitive assessment can be made.
The report also rejected theories that the virus was developed as a biological weapon, stressing that their supporters "have no direct access to the Wuhan Institute of Viruses" and are disseminating misinformation. The report released on Friday is an update of the 90-day review published by the Biden administration in August, amid fierce political struggles over China's guilt over the spread of the global epidemic in the face of the slow response of foreign governments.

China criticized the report. "The United States' reliance on its intelligence service instead of on scientists to investigate the origins of Cubid-19 is a complete political farce," Liu Pangio, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, said in a statement. "This will only harm science-based research and delay the global effort to find the source of the virus," the statement said.

The report noted that four agencies and a body that unites several agencies had "low security" that the virus originated in a sick animal or a similar virus. However, one agency noted that it had "medium-level confidence" that the spread of the virus to the first person was most likely the result of a laboratory accident, which involved experimenting or treating animals at the Wuhan Virus Institute,The Chinese city where the virus was first discovered.
U.S. intelligence does not believe it can provide a more cohesive explanation for the sources of the corona plague without new information proving that the virus has passed through a specific animal-to-human pathway or that the Bohan Institute has treated the virus or virus associated with it.
According to the report, the U.S. agencies and the global scientific community lack "clinical samples or a full understanding of epidemiological data from the earliest cases of Cubid-19," but the ambiguous findings may change if additional evidence emerges.

China has come under international criticism for not cooperating more transparently in investigating the sources of the virus.
The embassy announcement in Washington also rejected these allegations.
"We support scientifically based efforts to monitor the sources, and will continue to be actively involved. However, we strongly oppose attempts to politicize this issue," it said.
