A man bled to death from his injuries after being gored in a confinement in eastern Spain, authorities said.

It is the first death of its kind in the country since such events resumed after restrictions by the covid-19 during the summer.

The 55-year-old man, who has not been identified, was repeatedly attacked by the bull at the festival in Onda, the town council reported this Saturday.

Other participants tried to drive the animal away, without success.

The man died later Saturday at the hospital in the nearby town of Villarreal after bleeding from a wound on his left thigh that punctured his artery, emergency services said.

He also suffered a head injury.

The City Council of Onda canceled all the closings planned for the local festival, which will end on Sunday.

Other activities were not affected.

The public debate over whether bullfighting festivals should be abolished has become more heated in recent years, with only a small number occurring since restrictions on covid-19 were lifted in Spain.

The loose animals for this type of rampage are generally used in bullfights later in the day.

A 2020 poll conducted by Electomania, a polling company, found that 46.7% of Spaniards were in favor of banning bullfighting, 34.7% were not in favor but did not support a legal ban and 18 , 6% believed that it should be preserved.
