The “Seeds for flowering meadows” campaign in Unterföhring has proven to be a failure.

Only five homeowners were interested in the offer of bee-friendly seeds reimbursed by the community.

Nevertheless, the community does not want to give up in the fight for insect diversity.

Unterföhring - The campaign expires at the end of the year. However, the municipality does not want to abandon the vision of encouraging residents to ecologically upgrade their own gardens and is making one last attempt: for the next garden season in spring, the town hall will provide seeds free of charge. Interested Unterföhringers are spared the need to go to the nearest garden center.

The offer is aimed at landowners with their own garden.

One would like to see unused green spaces transformed into colorful flowering meadows in the town hall.

The background to this is the worldwide death of bees.

Middle and senior semesters may remember car trips ten, 20, or 30 years ago.

After two or three hours at the latest, the windshield was full of flattened insects.

The number of insects has decreased by 70 to 80 percent in the past few years, for which the cars are probably less responsible than the many pesticides.

This coming spring the community will have free seeds available in three to four different mixtures.

The seeds are distributed as required.

Interested parties are requested to indicate the place of use and the area in square meters upon receipt.

A maximum of 20 kilograms is available. The seeds would be enough for 7,500 square meters of new flowering meadows. In the first year of this final attempt, the amount is deliberately limited. The town hall points out that free seeds could be out of stock quickly if there is high demand. After the vegetation period, the experiment is finally assessed. In autumn, the local council will decide on the future of the “Seeds for flowering meadows” campaign.

he campaign was started in February 2019 based on the example of communities such as Ismaning, Kirchheim or Grünwald.

However, interested parties should procure seeds themselves.

The municipality would have reimbursed the purchase price for amounts between 10 and 1000 euros.

The flowering meadows should measure at least 20 square meters to one hectare.

Five applications were received, four were approved.

The community paid out a total of 235 euros.

All applications were submitted in 2019.

Since then, no one has shown any interest in free seeds.

In the opinion of the municipality, the required level of initiative may be responsible for the disappointing outcome of the “Seeds for flowering meadows” campaign.

So it will be a little easier next year.
